Use or Lose the Gift We Inherited

Use or Lose the Gift We Inherited

As of July 4, 2025, it has been 248 years since Thomas Jefferson and 55 other freedom-loving Americans initiated the Declaration of Independence. This was not just a political statement—it was a bold act of defiance that came at a tremendous personal cost. Many of these leaders lost their property, their livelihoods, and in some cases, their lives. They planted a chestnut tree they would never sit under, doing it not for themselves, but for us—their descendants by both blood and shared ideals.

Their commitment was an investment in the future, ensuring that we, as their actual and cultural heirs, could live up to our potential. The question that remains for us is whether we are using their extraordinary gift well—or taking it for granted.

How Are We Using Their Bequest?

For me, holding on to freedom is not primarily a political struggle, though politics certainly plays a role. Instead, it is a deeply personal, individual commitment—a daily striving to create a positive impact in my own way. Political advocacy has its place, but the more immediate and accessible defense of liberty happens in how we live and work each day.

Imagine protecting liberty not from a place of fear or reaction, but from a place of inspiration and creation. This is what artists, scientists, and entrepreneurs have done throughout history. Driven by passion—even obsession—they have brought their visions to life. They have painted Mona Lisas, discovered penicillin, and invented the computer. These achievements were possible only because they had the freedom of mind and spirit to pursue them.

If we truly value the sacrifices of our Founding Fathers, we must commit ourselves to preserving that same freedom—not just as a political concept, but as the foundation for creativity, innovation, and progress. Defining your Company Why™—a clear statement of purpose that drives your work—can be one of the most effective ways to align your actions with the principles you want to protect.

Freedom Requires Daily Intention

Maintaining freedom today takes no less intention and discipline than it did in the past. While we may not be facing muskets or bayonets, we contend with subtler but equally powerful forces—endless social media distractions, easy entertainment, manipulative advertising, and the seductive pull of groupthink. These forces, left unchecked, erode our ability to think independently and act with purpose.

Mental freedom is a discipline. It’s the conscious act of switching off the television, setting aside the phone, and creating space to read, exercise, reflect, or meditate. Without this deliberate effort, we drift into distraction and distortion, and eventually slide toward unfreedom. If we are honest, it is a kind of mental and psychological slavery—one we impose upon ourselves through inattention.

Remembering the Price of Liberty

On this day of freedom, it is worth reflecting on the very real personal risks and sacrifices made by the signers of the Declaration. Several, including Richard Stockton and George Walton, were captured by the British and imprisoned under brutal conditions. At least a dozen, among them Thomas Nelson Jr., Francis Lewis, and Lewis Morris, saw their homes ransacked or destroyed.

The cost was not limited to property. John Witherspoon lost a son in battle. Abraham Clark had two sons captured and subjected to inhumane treatment. While relatively few of the signers died directly from battle wounds, many endured financial ruin, declining health, and deep personal losses as a direct result of their commitment to the cause. Their sacrifice was not symbolic. It was real, it was costly, and it transformed history.

Make the Commitment

Freedom is not a permanent inheritance. It is something that must be earned and renewed daily through clarity, courage, and personal discipline. That means making intentional choices—every single day—to protect and cultivate our mental freedom, so we can continue to create meaningful work, build lasting relationships, and contribute positively to the world around us.
