As of July 4, 2025, it has been 248 years since Thomas Jefferson and 55 other freedom-loving Americans initiated the Declaration of Independence. This was not just a political statement—it was a bold act of defiance that came at a tremendous personal cost. Many of these leaders lost their property, their livelihoods, and in some cases, their lives. They planted a chestnut tree they would never sit under, doing it not for themselves, but for us—their descendants by both blood and shared ideals.
Their commitment was an investment in the future, ensuring that we, as their actual and cultural heirs, could live up to our potential. The question that remains for us is whether we are using their extraordinary gift well—or taking it for granted.
How Are We Using Their Bequest?
For me, holding on to freedom is not primarily a political struggle, though politics certainly plays a role. Instead, it is a deeply personal, individual commitment—a daily striving to create a positive impact in my own way. Political advocacy has its place, but the more immediate and accessible defense of liberty happens in how we live and work each day.
